On Saturday 5th October, the selection to choose the Ilford South Labour candidate was stopped after one of the candidates was suspended from the Labour Party.
Halting the process is absolutely the right thing to do. I made that clear at the earliest possible opportunity and spoke passionately in favour of it in the hall. I have run a positive people-powered campaign involving hundreds of local members and I'm confident that if my opponent hadn't been suspended, I would have won. There were no winners from the process being suspended.
We need to make sure that when the vote comes back to members - and I believe members need a vote - it is a fair process that people have confidence in. When that vote does come, I hope to win members' backing and that we can move forward united.
